The Tshwane Metropolitan Police, or Metro Police Service Division, was established in 2002 because of the increasing demand for a safer environment in the face of the high crime rate.

The Metropolitan Police do not duplicate the functions of the South African Police Service, but support it by focusing on proactive crime prevention in the city.

The main functions of this division are:

• Crime prevention
• By-law enforcement
