Pharmaceutical Services

The Pharmaceutical Services Section has two main objectives that guide its daily activities.  These are

  1. To ensure the availability of safe and effective medicines in adequate quantities where and when required at a cost that is affordable to the community.
  2. To ensure that the prescribed medicines achieve the purpose that they are intended for.

The actual activities of the section therefore revolve around:

  1. The procurement of medicines.
  2. Safe and secure storage of medicines to ensure maintenance of integrity up to the point of administration to or by the patient.
  3. Rational drug use and adherence to the national Essential Drugs List and Standard Treatment Guidelines.
  4. Adherence to Good Pharmacy Practices and Good Dispensing Practices to ensure that that the public is protected against the potential hazards presented by medicines.
  5. Ensuring patient empowerment to improve treatment outcomes and reduce cost of treatment.
  6. Being a point of reference on medicine related queries and playing a role in the training of staff on medicines and in Drug Supply Management.
  7. Ensure compliance by all staff that handles medicines with statutory regulations.

PHC Clinic Operations

 

The City of Tshwane is served by 23 fixed clinics and 3 satellites.

Population served

2,140,967 (DHIS Mid-year estimates 2007) based on the 2001 census figures.

Demography

The clinics serves population of all age and racial groups

Services rendered:

The following services are rendered in all municipal clinics on Monday – Friday from 07:00 – 16:00 and also Saturday from 08:00 – 13:00 in the following clinics:
Atteridgeville, Phomolong, Olievenhoutbosch, Hercules, Karenpark, Mamelodi West, Nellmapius, Eersterust, Phahameng, Rosslyn, FF Ribeiro, Danville, Stanza II and Phomolong.

  • Maternal and Women's health
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Management of Communicable Diseases
  • Comprehensive HIV/AIDS care, management and treatment
  • VCT
  • PMTCT
  • Chronic Diseases care, management and treatment
  • Treatment of acute and minor ailments
  • Adolescent and Youth Health

Clinical supervision

  • This is done jointly with Province per sub-district on a Monthly basis.
  • Quarterly reviews and reports are done jointly.
  • Facility planning done jointly.
  • Sub-district Bilateral meeting with Province on a monthly basis.
  • District Health planning (DHP) and District Health Expenditure Reviews (DHER) are done jointly with Province.

PHC Information, Training and Research

Core Functions
  • The rendering of a Health Information service
  • Rendering of a skills development support service to all line managers
  • Oversee all research projects in the Health Services division

PHC Policy, Programs and Compliance

PHC Policy, Program and Compliance section is responsible for coordinating the implementation of all National and/or Provincial health programs related to City of Tshwane Primary Health Care Services. The section comprises of the following operational units:

 

  • PHC Policy & Program Compliance Management:
  • PHC Regional Policy & Program Development & Maintenance
  • PHC Planning & Coordination
  • PHC Policy, Program & Compliance Operational Support (Health Promotion)

The key objective of this section is to:

  • Empower the community of Tshwane through health promotion campaigns and community participation;
  • Ensure prevention of communicable and non communicable diseases;
  • Ensure service delivery norms and standards compliance, monitor and evaluate the implementation thereof.
