Social Development

The Social Development Department focuses on creating healthy communities and empowering residents to prosper through holistic development. Our main goal is to ensure that residents have access to an integrated and comprehensive system of social services, facilities and programmes.

We pursue this goal through three divisions and one unit, namely:

Recent achievements

  • Moepathutse Children's Centre in Stinkwater ICD, together with Multichoice and Sappi, saw the growing need in the community and worked together to build a new home for vulnerable children in 2008. They also provided kitchen and recreational equipment, which included outdoor jungle gyms, televisions, play stations and sporting equipment. The donors handed over the project officially to the Executive Mayor on 1 April 2010;
  • Up to the end of May 2010 the total number of registered indigent households were 81 394;
  • Up to the end of May 2010, 1 095 individuals from registered indigent households have exited the programme;
  • The Ntataise programme was established in 2004 to address the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. The programme provides after-school care services offering children food, assistance with homework, recreational activities and life skills. The Ntataise programme is run in all the regions of Tshwane, and to date 1 800 children have benefited from it;
  • To date 290 early childhood development centres have been funded;
  • To date 536 early childhood development practitioners have been trained; and
  • Ten non-government organisations are funded annually. Twenty non-government organisations were funded during the previous two financial years. Fifteen non-government organisations focus on services to older people and five on young people in rehabilitation centres.
