Following the forecasts of heavy rain over the weekend the City of Tshwane urges residents who live in areas prone to flooding to safeguard themselves against the effects of floods.
The Tshwane Disaster Management Centre advises residents to -
seal their homes/houses off where they meet the ground by building mud walls (mud-and-grass mix) against the walls of their dwellings;
be alert to signs of flooding
alert neighbours especially the elderly and physically disabled people
do not walk, swim or drive through flooded areas
avoid low bridges
if your car stalls in a flooded area do not remain in the car
fill all ditches up with mud, grass, gravel, etc;
make sure the entrance to the house is higher than the surrounding ground;
store food and valuables on a higher level, eg shelves, tables and chairs;
Fill up containers with clean water in case regular supplies are contaminated
prepare an emergency kit with essential belongings in case of evacuation;
remain in contact with neighbours and take turns to monitor the water level;
keep the radio on and listen to warnings;
cooperate with officials of the SAPS, Metro Police, Roads and Stormwater and Disaster Management when requested;
