Venning / Rose Park
This park was previously known as Eastwood Square. The name Venning
Park honoured John Harold Venning, former Municipal Director of Parks
who retired in 1940. Today the park is known as Rose Park mainly due
to the Rosarium wich is filled with more than 3 000 rose bushes. The
Rosarium was established by the Northern Transvall Rose Society, the
roses donated by various rose nurseries. Here, one can view the rose
named “City of Pretorria” amongst 30 different rose species.
The Rose Park covers an area of 30620m².
Springbok Park
Previously known as Grosvenor Park, bordered by this street, it became
Springbok Park in the 1960’s. The original name was in commemoration
of Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, Duke of Westminister, who was closely
associated with South Africa. The name Grosvenor is of Norman-French
origin: le gros veneur – “the great chief hunter”.
Presently Springbok Park envelopes 30621m², on which a popular
restaurant resides, providing a relaxed and jovial atmosphere.
Hillcrest Swimming Pool
The Hilcrest public swimming pool was officially opened by the Mayor
on 28th Feburary 1955, when the South African Swimming and Diving Championships
and Currie Cup water polo tournament took place. Later in the same year,
1955, Pretoria held its centenary celebrations at the Hillcrest Swimming
Baths by hosting an Aquatic Carnival. This was directed by Verdi Lounsbury
with acknowledgements to O. McCormick.
