Major Projects in Tshwane
Tshwane International Convention Centre
An urban renewal programme is in place in Tshwane for the regeneration
of the city's central business district. This programme has been linked
to the urban renewal tax incentive scheme that encourages investment
in certain urban development zones. The programme is serving as a catalyst
for the economic renaissance of the heart of the city. Complementing
it will be a new convention centre for the city – the Tshwane
International Convention Centre. The four-hectare development, to be
built near the lakeside shopping centre in Centurion, will have the
capacity to accommodate more than 10 000 delegates in an ultramodern
auditorium. The complex will include a three-star hotel and a five-star
establishment.
Mabopane-Centurion Development Corridor
Since one of the areas of focus of the Municipality
is the revitalisation of the economy in the western part of the metropolitan
area, the Municipality is actively involved in the Mabopane-Centurion
Development Corridor (MCDC), viewing it as a flagship development project.
The Municipality's involvement relates primarily to project management
and coordination, and the provision of bulk infrastructure and services.
The MCDC is located on the western, southwestern and
northern fringes of the city, which puts it in the middle of the economic
hub of South Africa and Southern Africa, making it ideal for enterprises
and investors to tap into the potential of the large consumer markets
available in Pretoria, Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand. The eastern
and southeastern fringes of the MCDC interface with the established
development patterns in Pretoria, but also with other development areas
such as Centurion and Midrand.
Apart from the obvious influence of the Pretoria central
business district as a major employment node and the many shopping opportunities
on the eastern side of the MCDC, the most prominent features of the
surrounding metropolitan area are:
• The large population within the immediate bounds of the Soshanguve,
Klipfontein and Kruisfontein areas
• The east-west potential for development between the Hartebeespoort
Dam and
Pretoria
• The rural and agricultural nature of the west and southwest
• The strong urban open space system
• The closeness of the Centurion and Midrand growth sectors to
the southeast of the MCDC
The MCDC is located where the Trans-Kalahari Transport
Corridor, the Platinum Spatial Development Initiative route and the
Maputo Development Corridor meet. Industrialists in the MCDC will therefore
also enjoy the advantages offered by the east-west road and rail that
link the deep-water harbour of Maputo (Mozambique) in the east to the
deep-water harbour of Walvis Bay (Namibia).
Though Tshwane is a long way from the sea, it enjoys
international port status because of its container depot in Capital
Park. Containerised cargo can therefore be transported direct to Tshwane
by rail, with all customs formalities handled locally.
The MCDC provides investors with an excellent base
from which to reach the emerging African markets, giving substance to
South Africa's status as the gateway to Africa.
The closeness of Tshwane to a number of modern airports
and important rail and road links makes it ideal for business and for
importing and exporting. Tshwane is also highly regarded for its manufacturing,
technology, electronics, defence design and construction sectors. It
offers unequalled business opportunities and a well-developed, dynamic
infrastructure, allowing all types of business to prosper and grow.
The city is highly competitive and is becoming known as the ideal investment
location where economic opportunities in manufacturing and trade abound.
