The City of Tshwane won an Eco-Logic Award in the municipalities category for the Atteridgeville Eco Park.

In November 2016, the City of Tshwane, in partnership with New GX Enviro, launched South Africa’s first large-scale build-operate-transfer project in the waste management sector. The Atteridgeville Recycling Park (ARP) provides recyclable waste, composting and rubble-crushing, and ensures the diversion of close to half of Tshwane’s waste. The ARP represents a significant township economy, industrialisation and revitalisation initiative bringing jobs and SMME development opportunities to a township area. Upon completion, it will represent a total investment of R245 million and create more than 300 local jobs. After a 15-year concession period, ownership will transfer to the City of Tshwane at no cost. The ARP is part of the City of Tshwane’s commitment to a green economy that delivers value to Tshwane’s residents.

The Eco-Logic Awards identified individuals, organisations and communities who positively contribute towards a sustainable world, and encourage consumers to purchase their products and services. The Enviropaedia established the Annual Eco-Logic Awards in 2011. These have since grown into South Africa’s most glamorously green eco-calendar event, receiving extensive TV, radio, print media and online coverage. Each year the public nominate their eco champions, highlighting how they contribute to an eco-logically sustainable society and environment. A team of highly respected, environmentally-aware individuals then judge all entries using seven criteria that are the “root” of eco-logic, and select finalists in each category.
