    Human rights Day

    Wed, Mar 20, 2019

The City of Tshwane joins the rest of the country in celebrating Human Rights Day on 21 March 2019 under the theme "The year of indigenous languages: Promoting and deepening a human rights culture".

This theme has been set by national government, and the President of the Republic will speak to it at his main address in this year's commemoration in Sharpeville. The theme seeks to draw attention to the critical importance of indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalise and promote them.

The commemorative theme is the coming together of a dream to which the people of South Africa long aspired, and for which they fought and died in their country of birth. After 25 years into democracy, we fondly reflect and appreciate the journey it took and the continued progress made in this area. For instance, the 16 June revolt was not just about the rejection of Afrikaans by Africans, but more about the need for recognition of the indigenous languages of our country.

Significant strides have been made to accommodate linguistic diversity in our country by setting the legislative framework to enable indigenous languages to thrive, not only as home languages, but also as languages of use in government. The City of Tshwane has led in this area through its dedicated Language Services Section.

We thus join the country in marking languages as an integral human rights imperative.

    MENSEREGTEDAG, 21 MAART 2019
