On 30 September 2020, the
Head Administrator, Mr Mpho Nawa, officially reopened the intersection in John
Vorster Drive that borders Southdowns Shopping Centre, Southdowns College and
Southdowns Estate. The road had been closed to repair a sinkhole at the
intersection of John Vorster Drive and Karee Street.
The general manager of Southdowns Estate, Ms Daleen Hennig, said that she
was thrilled by the road being reopened. “Residents are going to be so happy that
they will be able to use the road again, and it will ease the peak-hour traffic,”
Although the initial budget was R10 million, the sinkhole was repaired at
a cost of R7 million and the work was completed on time in spite of the COVID-19
lockdown regulations. Mr Nawa thanked the team for their hard work and
efficiency, and expressed his gratitude to the residents of Southdowns Estate
for their patience.
The operations manager of Southdowns Shopping Centre, Mr Frank Hetzel,
said that they were grateful to the City for the prompt response to repair the
sinkhole. He also said that reopening the road is good for trade, because the
shopping complex contributes to Tshwane’s development and economy.
