The City of Tshwane will join millions around the world on 16 October 2020 to commemorate World Food Day. World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945.

The 2020 World Food Day will be celebrated virtually to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage food-borne risks that affect food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development under the theme Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.

To answer the United Nations call on food security for all, the City of Tshwane has intensified local food production at household and community level by providing vegetable seedlings as a sustainable intervention towards access to food. Since food safety and availability are a shared responsibility, the city will champion the programme with the assistance of the food industry, farmers, scientific bodies and the general public, urging all to join forces and participate in a campaign to promote awareness of local food production.

The City is urging its residents to play their role play in food systems by considering the following everyday actions in ensuring food security for all:

    • Choose seasonal foods
    • Choose local foods
    • Grow food at home
    • Choose healthy and diverse foods
    • Influence positive will regarding food
    Join food initiatives
