 Environmental design and redesign can be broken into two subsections:
  • Situational
  • Pro-active
Situational EDR
 
Crime prevention through environmental Design (CPTED) can be defined as “The prevention of crime through planning and design aimed at reducing the causes of and opportunities for, criminal events and to address the fear of crime by applying sound planning, design and management principles to the built environment”.
 
Involves the management, design or manipulation of the immediate environment in a systematic and permanent way as possible.

Pro-Active EDR 
 
Aims to render a service or be actively involved prior to the actual construction or development of environmental structures as well as the inception of security villages or gated communities.  This entails an active role in city planning, urban design, renovations and recreational facilities etcetera.
