    Strubendam Dam Sanctuary

The dam was upgraded in September 1984 to form part of the flood control system of the Waterkloof Spruit.

Activities and Facilities

  • The Sanctuary is ideal for hiking, casual fishing, birding and having a picnic. 
  • Ablution facilities are available. 
  • Big shaded lawns invite the visitor to sit down and relax. 
  • No fires are allowed.

Wildlife

The birdlife is abundant. Fish species available are banded tilapia, sharp tooth catfish, canary curper karp and bass.

Vegetation

The vegetation at Strubendam is called Bankenveld, which is a transitional vegetation type between grasslands and bushveld. Also to be found are marsh areas and riverine bush below the dam wall. River bush willow, Acacia karroo, Acacia caffra and Celtis africana are the dominant three species. Small groups of indigenous trees and shrubs occur in the higher parts.

  • Summer ( September - April): 06:00 - 18:00 
  • Winter ( May - August): 06:00 - 18:00

How to get there

Take the Atterbury turn-off from the N1 to the east. Turn left into Ingersol Road and then left into Ilkey road. Turn right into Innes Road . The main gate is on the right –hand side.
