Church Square

Statue of Paul Kruger on Church Square
  • The Palace of Justice forms part of the Northern Façade of Church Square. Dating from the end of the 19th century, it was designed in the typical Italian Renaissance style, by Dutch architect Sytze Wierda. It is the headquarters of the Gauteng Provincial Division of the Supreme Court.
  • The sculptor Anton van Wouw's statue of Paul Kruger occupies the centre stage on Church Square. While the bronze figures of Kruger and the sentries were cast in Italy at the turn of the century, it was only in 1954 that they were installed in their rightful place.
  • The Ou Raadsaal (Old Government Building) on the southern side of the square was designed by Dutch architect Sytze Wierda and erected by JJ Kirkness, a Scotsman from the Orkney Isles in 1887.
  • Parades are held at the square on Wednesdays. Call 012 328 3173 for details.
Address: Crossing Church and Paul Kruger Streets, Pretoria

The Wednesday Parade

  1. It has been happening every Wednesday from 09:30 to 10:30 since 26 May 1999!
  2. The starting point and street route to Church Square change every month, starting on Paul Kruger Street South and clockwise in the four directions to Church Square:
    • Paul Kruger Street South from City Hall: January, May, September
    • Church Street West from the Kruger Museum: February, June, October
    • Paul Kruger Street North from the Synagogue: March, July, November
    • Church Street East from Prinsloo Street: April, August, December
  3. The procession consists of members of the National Ceremonial Guard (NCG) and one of the military bands, eg the South African Air Force, the South African Navy or the NCG`s own band.
  4. Two flags, the national and the city flag, are hoisted on the north-eastern quadrant of Church Square while the National Anthem is played.
  5. A person, usually a news personality, artist or achiever, is invited to take the salute and address the crowd for about three to five minutes in at least two of the official languages.
  6. Afterwards this person, the band and the officials of the NCG are invited for a cup of coffee or a beer at one of the restaurants at Church Square.
  7. This was the idea and concept of Orangerie Coalition Champions and is operated by us free of charge. Furthermore, it is one of the most successful public-private partnerships between the SANDF, the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, the Church Square Commerce Forum (cscf@churchsquare.co.za) and Orangerie Coalition Champions.
  8. The first Wednesday Parade for 2005 will take place on 19 January.

The Plein Pétanque Club

  1. Every Wednesday afternoon from 16:00 pétanque is played on the northwestern quadrant of Church Square.
  2. Everyone is welcome and you do not need to have experience. There are always club members who are willing to accompany novices and show them how it is done.
  3. Balls can be hired from Café Riche at R5 for two, or you can bring your own balls.
  4. The Plein Pétanque Club has already been in existence for three years and has also hosted a tournament.
  5. Café Riche is the clubhouse and drinks are served there (caferiche@churchsquare.co.za, 012 328 3173).
