INNER-CITY CLEANUP ACTION: JULY 2004

PURPOSE

To enforce the law and carry out combined cleanup actions at night when circumstances are more favourable for these kinds of operations.

ACTIONS TAKEN

The operation started with follow-up inspections of sites previously cleaned up. Patrols were then sent through the inner city. Paul Kruger, Church, Van der Walt, Bloed, Boom, Pretorius, Andries, Proes, Struben and Prinsloo Streets were all covered.

Although most of these streets were cleaned of illegal structures, they were still untidy from the garbage that hawkers leave behind after trading during the day.

Structures were removed in Marabastad, specifically the corner of DF Malan Drive and Proes Street where contravention notices under the National Building Regulations had previously been served on premises there. In compliance with the regulations, occupants had been given 24 hours to get the necessary consent to stay or demolish the offending structures. The nature of the structures (size, weight, etc) meant that the assistance of the city engineering unit was needed with additional trucks and a crane.
