Fashion in Africa

Fashion in Africa is a joint venture between Tshwane and Tunis, Tunisia, and forms part of the annual Tshwane Business Week.

The purpose of this venture is to promote African fashion, and arts and crafts, to establish partnerships, to generate business and to stimulate the economy - in particular the clothing and textile industries.

It's all happening in one of the aircraft hangars at the Wonderboom Airport from 5 to 7 May 2006. The gala event and fashion show - by invitation only - will be on Friday, 5 May. Five established fashion designers from each country will showcase their designs in the fashion show, with Absa Bank being the main sponsor, with a bank sponsorship to the value of R 500 000. Another sponsor is Precision Aviation Services. They are making a hangar available for a week for the fashion in Africa project. The monetary value of this sponsorship amounts to about R500 000.

On Saturday, 6 May, four mini fashion shows and an arts and culture exhibition - open to the public - will be staged and entertainment will be provided. An added bonus is the Wonderboom Air Show happening at the same time.

A competition will be held for emerging designers from South Africa and Tunisia to select the best young fashion designer. The winners - one from South Africa and one from Tunisia - will each receive the Executive Mayor's Best Young Designer Award.
