City Infrastructure

With its growing economy, natural resources, excellent infrastructure, first-rate educational and research institutions and the availability and affordability of its municipal services in general, Tshwane is truly a place where you can live.

Tshwane is currently one of the healthiest municipalities financially speaking. It has received an A+ long-term credit rating from CA Ratings, which means its outlook is strong, and an A short-term rating, which means it is stable. This is the highest short-term rating possible. The ratings are based on the city's ability to meet its long-term commitments, its short-term liquidity and its level of administrative, executive and political stability.

Transport

The city has an excellent road infrastructure and a reliable municipal bus service. The buses do 2 200 single trips and 234 peak-time trips to transport commuters every day. In addition, the Tshwane Taxi Forum is used as a benchmark for South Africa, and the intermodal management format developed for the city is used countrywide.

The closeness of Tshwane to modern airports and important rail and road links makes it an ideal location for business, tourism, imports and exports. As the Wonderboom Airport is situated alongside the Mabopane-Centurion Development Corridor, the possibility of using it as an international freight airport is currently being investigated.

Tshwane's inner city is a drive of about 50 km from Johannesburg's city centre and the same distance from the OR Tambo International Airport.

The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, the rail-bound mass transit system that is being constructed, will serve the Johannesburg-Tshwane corridor and provide a link between Sandton and the OR Tambo International Airport. Funded by the Gauteng government and the private sector, three stations will be constructed in Tshwane (Centurion, Pretoria and Hatfield). The distance between Tshwane and Johannesburg will be covered in less than 35 minutes at a speed of 160 km/h or more. It is envisaged that this project will be completed in 2010.

Furthermore, Tshwane will be implementing a mass rapid transit system, a high-quality, customer-orientated bus service that delivers fast, comfortable and low-cost urban mobility, by 2010. It typically involves busway corridors on segregated lanes and modernised bus technology.

Financial services

All the major banks and financial services institutions are located in Tshwane. Most of the commercial banks have foreign exchange departments, which are open during normal banking hours. However, some major hotels also have exchange points at their reception areas.

Medical facilities

Various medical facilities are available in Tshwane, and most of the medical practitioners are available 24 hours. Approximately 36 hospitals and clinics are located in Tshwane.
