Favourites from the International Printmaking Collection

An exhibition of favourite international prints from the Pretoria Art Museum's permanent collection is held in the Henry Preiss Hall from September until December 2007. This selection includes the works of well-known twentieth-century international artists such as Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali.

Despite the continual rise in the prices of artworks, which hampers the acquisition of oil paintings and sculptures by famous international artists, the Pretoria Art Museum has managed to acquire some graphic artworks as examples of international art movements that influenced the development of South African art.

The museum's collection includes a few examples of German expressionist art created by artists who developed the satirical styles after World War I. A number of South African artists who travelled abroad were influenced by these styles, as well as by the "neue sachlichheit" (new objectivity). Surrealism in Europe (creation inspired by the subconscious) has also been a dominant force in Western art. Artworks reflecting the influence of surrealism and pop art (with its sense of irony and playfulness) helped to prepare the way for the post-modernism of the 1970s and 1980s.

The Pretoria Art Museum is at the corner of Schoeman and Wessels Streets in Arcadia Park, Arcadia, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
