What's On at the Pretoria Art Museum

For this exhibition, artworks have been selected from the permanent collection of the Pretoria Art Museum. Over the years, visitors' special liking for certain artworks has been clearly evident, and this varied exhibition is an attempt to provide for the taste of every visitor.

A selection of artworks from the permanent collection tells a brief story of South African art from the time of the first San artists. This selection includes the works of early 20th century painters, Resistance artists of the 1980s and artists of the 21st century.

A selection from ceramics representing the development of studio ceramics and the work of the rural traditional potters of South Africa over the past thirty years is displayed.

For this exhibition, artworks have been selected from the permanent collection of international printmaking of the Pretoria Art Museum. This selection includes the works of well known 20th century international artists such as Pablo Picasso and Rene Magritte.

This display of contemporary South African Graphics illustrates the post-modernist shift of attention from the art object to the art idea. The works include graphics executed at the end of the 20th century and some from this century. Artists are inventing a new language of communication in which the new media, sophisticated technology and social context play important roles. These works are expressions of the nature of post-modern artworks - they are often merely the agents that set in motion affinities, ideas and emotions within the spectator.
