MUNICIPAL HEALTH SERVICES (MHS)

MHS aims at improving environmental health conditions in Tshwane.

The National Health Act (Act 61 of 2003) stipulates that Municipal Health Services (MHS) must be provided for communities by municipalities in the local government sphere. Municipal Health Services comprise:

  • water quality monitoring;
  • food safety;
  • waste management;
  • health surveillance of premises;
  • control of communicable diseases;
  • vector control;
  • environmental pollution control;
  • disposal of the dead; and
  • chemical safety.

In order to promote the health and well-being of communities, the Environmental Health Practitioners of the MHS section render these services through:

  • Building and site development plans;
  • Complaints management;
  • Premises certification;
  • Premises inspection;
  • Sample management; and
  • Health awareness and events.
