The Tshwane Metro Police Department has developed what is known as ward-based strategy (WBS) policing. The WBS is aimed at effective coverage of the entire Tshwane area by means of decentralising operational deployment to the seven regions of the City, which includes all of its 105 wards. This regionalisation is intended to secure greater accessibility and efficiency in operational responses as well as strategic alignment to the regionalisation model adopted by the City of Tshwane. The regions are further broken down into sectors for practical operational alignment and clarification of roles.
The ward-based strategy is aimed at achieving greater operational presence, improved community relations, the establishment of safety committees at ward level, greater cooperation and understanding amongst local leadership, well-profiled wards, integrated community safety efforts at ward level and ward-based roll-out of the safer city policy.
The ward-based strategy includes a holistic approach that goes beyond ward committees and also provides Metro Police services to the business sector, faith-based organisations and so forth.
