Love birds? Then a visit to the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is a must. Visit this awesome sanctuary for a wide variety of birds such as blacksmith, lapwing and white-bellied sunbird. Other species include our very own South African national bird, the blue crane, as well as the crowned crane.
The sanctuary was officially proclaimed as a nature reserve on 26 February 1985 and named after South Africa's greatest ornithologist, J Austin Roberts. It is located in the Walker Spruit open space system. Two streams, the Walker and the Argo, feed water into wetland basins, of which nine are small perennial dams that attract waterbirds such as Egyptian geese, white-breasted cormorant and hadeda ibis.
The facility has an exhibition hall and guided walks can be arranged.
