Wonderboom Nature Reserve
Wonderboom Nature Reserve Coordinates 'S25 41 202 E028 11 384

Situated a little north of the Tshwane CBD is Wonderboom Nature Reserve that straddles the Magaliesberg. This reserve is better known for its "Wonderboom", a magnificent specimen of Ficus salicifolia, a wild fig tree that is older than 1 000 years. It is recorded that the tree was once big enough to shade 1 000 people at a time, or 22 ox wagons with 20 oxen in front of each!

Over the years the branches have grown longer, hanging lower until they touched the ground, where they rooted and produced a circle of daughter trees. There are now three circles of daughter trees surrounding the original tree.

Things to do at Wonderboom Nature Reserve

Hiking: The hiking trails offer scenic views and a cultural experience with a fort at the top of the mountain. At the foot of the mountain near the Wonderboom is an important Iron Age site and nearby is one of the best Stone Age sites in the area. You can do any of the following:

·         Wonderboom tree interpretive trail – 0,5 km
·         Fort hiking trail – 2 km
·         Waterfall hiking trail – 1 km Joos Becker guided trail – 2,6 km

The reserve's picnic area at the foot of the mountain has braai facilities, large trees and open lawns.

Wildlife at Wonderboom Nature Reserve

Apart from zebra, impala, rock hyrax and porcupine, various small mammals, reptiles and amphibians can be seen.

Bird lovers can try to spot any of the 200 bird species present at the reserve. The steep climb up the hill will be worth the effort, as you will see and hear many of them, maybe even the verrequxii/black eagles who breed there regularly.
