What To Do

As a visitor to Tshwane – one of the oldest cities in South Africa, with a rich heritage and immense cultural diversity - you are welcome to join the thousands who visit the city each year to experience its many landmarks, heritage sites, and other places of important historical, cultural and spiritual significance.

The City manages a number of recreational and sports facilities that offer residents and visitors alike a large variety of opportunities for leisure and relaxation.

In keeping with our focus on inspiring the world, influencing Africa and leading South Africa, Tshwane is replete with many fine heritage sites, museums and art galleries. These include the Union Buildings and its spectacular gardens, as well as the Diamond Hill Battlefield, Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park. Other must-sees include the Pretoria Botanical Gardens, the Zoo, and museums such as Melrose House, the Pioneer Museum, and Sammy Marks museum and art galleries such the Tugwell art gallery in Brooklyn or the Association of Arts in Nieuw Muckleneuk. There are various art museums to see such as the Pretoria Art Museum in Schoeman street or the Van Wouw Art Museum in the Old Arts Building in the University of Pretoria.

Besides celebrating our cultural diversity, visitors can also range outdoors – Tshwane’s parks and other outdoor facilities offer the perfect respite from the hustle-and-bustle of business of the central business district (CBD) and urban districts. The City is particularly proud of its natural heritage and is world renowned for its many trees. Affectionately known as the Jacaranda City, Tshwane is home to the Pretoria National Zoological Gardens - the largest zoo in the country – while our botanical gardens are spread over 76 hectares. Outdoor activities include bird watching, nature reserves, golf, adventure sport - and so much more.

Of course, the City not only caters for the casual tourist; business visitors have access to superb conference and hospitality facilities at our leading hotels and conference centres.

Tshwane is also home to many national embassies and High Commissions, and provides world-class services to members of the diplomatic community. We also host many government and business delegates from around the world throughout the year.

Accommodation ranges from lavish five-star hotels, first-world conference centres, to warm and comfortable bed and breakfasts (B&Bs).

In addition, the City of Tshwane offers residents, local and foreign visitors a wonderful selection of fine dining restaurants and eateries that cater for all tastes and appetites. We are renowned for our top-rated restaurants that offer a selection of menus that cater to all palates – and budgets.
