Rietvlei Nature Reserve belongs to the City of Tshwane and came into existence due to a water scheme to supply drinking water for the city of Pretoria. Rietvlei Nature Reserve is, therefore, a fairly large nature reserve in an urban setting and covers about 4 000 hectares. It has survived as a conservation area since 1929.

Night drives: two-hour drive from 18:00 – 20:00 with the reserve's vehicle and accompanied by a qualified guide as well as the use of the Tshukudu Lapa until 22:00; minimum 10 and maximum 20 people.

We also do day drives at the same cost; the terms above also apply to day drives.

Overnight horse trails (guided by a qualified guide): minimum 6 and maximum 8 people, from Friday to Sunday. Cost includes the tour over all three days. There are overnight hut facilities with bunk beds and mattresses, two pots and a kettle, a bathroom with shower, an outside room with firewood and a small braai area. No electricity. Bookings and contact numbers

All bookings for activities and venues should be made a minimum of two weeks in advance, but there is no need to make a booking or prearrange for normal day visits to the reserve.

Visiting hours

  • Summer (September to March): 05:30 – 17:00 for the cashier's office. Guests must enter by 16:00 and may remain in the reserve until 19:00, which is when the reserve itself closes.
  • Winter (May to August): 06:00 – 18:00 for the cashier's office. Guests must enter by 17:00 and may remain in the reserve until 18:00, which is when the reserve itself closes.

Entrance to the nature reserve will only be allowed until one hour before closing time.
