Wonderful Trees of Pretoria is a first-of-its-kind book in South Africa. Over many years, the author has collected legends and long-forgotten details about wonderful and unusual trees, planted by famous (and not-so-famous) people, that deserve to be preserved for posterity as part of our natural cultural heritage. In addition, he describes a large number of indigenous trees in his fascinating book. Driven by his love for trees and passion for history, Eric Bolsmann has researched the subject in the National Archives in Pretoria and combed parks, gardens, the grounds of public institutions, and the streets of Pretoria in search of unusual specimens of the living monuments counted among God's most precious gifts to mankind.
Activities on the day of the book launch will include the author being in attendance throughout the day to sign books, the planting of trees in Arcadia Park, and an introduction to Wonderful Trees of Pretoria by the author. The president of the Jakaranda Lions Club, Lindie van Wyk, will speak on the objectives and activities of the club. There will also be an introduction to the paintings of trees in the municipal collection by Dirk Oegema of the Pretoria Art Museum; a talk by Christopher Willis, the Chief Director: Conservation Gardens and Tourism of the South African National Biodiversity Institute in Pretoria; and an introduction to the Dendrological Society by Professor André de Villiers.
Diabetes awareness and screening will be offered free of charge by the Jakaranda Lions Club.
