Sport Tourism

The City of Tshwane plays host to numerous local, national and international sporting events.

Most recent and memorable sporting events include the Rugby World Cup, Cricket World Cup, All Africa Games, World Tug of War Championships, World Junior Chess Championships and the international karate championships.

Major sporting facilities in the city include Supersport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion, Sicuricor Loftus, home of the Blue Bulls and recently also a venue for major soccer events, the High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria and Pilditch athletics stadium in Pretoria West.

The capital city of South Africa rallies in support of two top Premiership football clubs, Sundowns and Supersport United.

The city enjoys a strong heritage in rugby, cricket and athletics. Sicuricor Loftus hosted major matches in both 1995 Rugby World Cup and the African Cup of nations in 1996. Supersport Park cricket stadium featured as a major venue during the ICC Cricket World cup in 2003. The city was nominated as one of the best organized cities during this tournament.

Loftus stands as one of the capital city's most familiar landmarks. The stadium is situated scarcely two kilometers from the city centre, in the heart of an attractive tree-lined residential area that accommodates row upon row of foreign embassies.

Runners, cyclists and walkers have an array of races and club meetings that can be attended throughout the year. Most races in Tshwane take place on Saturdays. Klapperkop hill, one of the Time- ball hills near the Fountains, is often used as a training route for these sports disciplines, however, the hill makes for a splendid panoramic view of the city.

Motor sport enthusiasts can indulge in their favorite activity at the Zwartkops Race Track, where go-carting as well as motor racing takes place on a regular basis.

Sport- related conferences, workshops and clinics are held in the city throughout the year because of the ideal weather conditions and height above sea level.

The City of Tshwane will also be involved in one of the most spectacular sport events hitting the continent of Africa, namely the 2010 Soccer World Cup, during which South Africa will act as the host country.

The city is working on the establishment of the Rainbow Junction Stadium that will be characterized by a bold and imaginative leaf- shaped canopy that covers the stadium's main stand on one side, and effectively covers the indoor sports arena on the other side. The capacity of this stadium will be 41 000 (excluding VIP's and media). The scheduled date of completion is November 2007.
