APPLYING FOR A HOUSING SUBSIDY

Register now and wait for your turn.

1. What is a government housing subsidy?

A government housing subsidy is a grant provided by the Government for housing purposes. The Government does not give cash to the beneficiaries. The grant is used for housing only.

2. Who can apply for a government housing subsidy?

• you must be 21 years or older;
• you must be married or single with dependants or cohabiting with a partner for a long time;
• you must be unemployed or earning not more than R7 000 per household;
• you must either be a South African citizen or a foreigner with a permanent residential permit;
• you must not have received government housing assistance before; and
• you must be a first-time home owner.

3. Where to apply?

Apply at your nearest satellite office. The Municipality has sections that deal with housing issues. There will be computers to capture your data at all satellite offices. Computers at the satellite offices will be linked to the provincial database.

4. How to apply?

You do not pay any fee to apply for a house that is subsidised by the Government. Visit your nearest satellite office and bring the following documents along with you:

• Your ID book
• Your spouse`s ID book (if applicable)
• Birth certificates of dependants (children)
• Proof of income if you are employed
• You will need proof (eg an affidavit) for extended family members (eg your late sister`s child)

You can make copies of the documents and certify them before you visit the satellite offices. You can certify them at your nearest police station or at the magistrates` courts.

5. What about people with special needs?

Housing cares for people with disabilities. These are people who have special needs and include, for example, people who use wheelchairs and whose houses need wide doors. More information on this is available at the satellite offices and the provincial offices.

6. I have applied - what now?

When you apply at your nearest satellite office, you will receive proof of registration, which is FORM C. This form shows the date on which you applied and your application number. Take along this form to your nearest satellite office or provincial office to check if your name appears on the provincial waiting list. If your name appears on the provincial waiting list, you must wait for your turn.

Always check with your satellite office or the provincial office on the progress made with your application.

7. Remember!

• Inform the satellite office when you change your residential and postal details.
