The City of Tshwane, alongside Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the Danish Embassy, and the City of Aarhus, unveiled an environmental awareness mural at TUT’s Science Campus on 19 May 2026. Positioned within a nature-based solutions garden, the artwork highlights sustainable practices such as innovative urban drainage and ecological planting. Featuring the blue crane, South Africa’s national bird, the mural emphasises the impact of pollution and conveys a clear message: “Let’s Clean up our Act,” urging residents to protect the environment.
This initiative forms part of a broader Tshwane–Aarhus partnership focused on sustainable water management and climate resilience. The collaboration, supported by Denmark’s Strategic Sector Cooperation, demonstrates long-term international cooperation in sustainability and urban development. Developed jointly by project partners and brought to life by local artist Jaco Uitenweerde, the mural uses “artivism” to spark dialogue and awareness, particularly in overlooked urban spaces.
Located near the Apies River, the project reinforces the importance of protecting natural heritage. A symbolic planting of an endangered pepper bark tree further underscores conservation goals. Overall, the initiative reflects Tshwane’s commitment to sustainability, urban renewal, and community-driven environmental responsibility.
