Cllr Makwarela elected as new Executive Mayor of Tshwane

The newly elected Executive Mayor of Tshwane is the former Speaker of Council, Cllr Murunwa Makwarela, who is a genetic engineer by training and former City official. The City of Tshwane Council convened a special meeting on 28 February 2023 to vote for a mayor following the resignation of Ald Randall Williams.

Cllr Makwarela said that he is committed to good governance principles to enhance service delivery and put the needs of residents at the forefront. “We will champion service delivery to ensure that much-needed services are delivered to our people,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, the new Executive Mayor said that both provincial and national governments would be called in to help rebuild the capital city. Cllr Makwarela said that the state of the metro’s finances has revealed a City in distress. He called on all sectors to assist with returning to good governance.
