Media statement 15 February 2024
Cllr Rina Marx
MMC for Health
Earlier this week, I conducted a follow-up oversight visit to the construction site of the new Lusaka Clinic in Mamelodi.
This visit was in keeping with my commitment made in January 2024 to visit the site every two weeks to track progress and intervene where needed. As previously indicated, delays resulted in a revised timeline for the completion of the project, which is now the end of May 2024.
I am happy to report that since my last visit on 30 January 2024, work on the ceiling has commenced, the air conditioning is being installed, and tiling, plumbing and painting work have also commenced.
To mitigate the risk of further delays to the project, the City of Tshwane Health Department project team, along with professional service providers, are undertaking weekly site monitoring to ensure that the contract terms are adhered to and remain on track for the May 2024 completion. This is a part of the recovery plan instituted by the Health Department for the main contractor to mitigate the risk of further delays. Overall, the cumulative construction progress is assessed to be at 92%.
To date, the project has created 60 temporary employment opportunities. The clinic will be a flagship project for the City of Tshwane as it will be the first green clinic of its kind. Lusaka Clinic was designed around the green building principles, including central courtyards to bring in fresh air, and water storage and external shading to reduce heat transfer, among others.
The clinic will render comprehensive primary healthcare services to the community of Mamelodi Ext 22 and adjacent areas.
