City of Tshwane to host health outreach programmes on HIV, TB, STIs, substance abuse and non-communicable diseases

Media statement                                                                                                5 August 2024

Cllr Rina Marx

MMC for Health

I am pleased to announce that the City of Tshwane Health Department will host health outreaches in selected areas across all seven regions of Tshwane over the next seven weeks. Beginning on 8 August 2024 at The Orchards in Ward 110, Region 1, this initiative is informed by our long-standing objective to bring services closer to communities.

On offer at these outreaches will be health and awareness services in relation to the following:

  • HIV counselling and testing, treatment literacy and antiretroviral (ART) initiation and re-initiation
  • Screening for non-communicable diseases, such as blood sugar and blood pressure, immunisation and vaccination
  • Health awareness of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Screening and awareness in relation to tuberculosis (TB)
  • Screening and awareness in relation to substance use and referrals
  • Health awareness on all health programmes offered by the City of Tshwane

Apart from the department’s own Multisectoral AIDS Management Unit, Community Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP) and health promotion teams, the outreaches will involve valued partners such as the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), #keready, Mpathy Clinic and ImpiloRAD.

The newly elected Tshwane Civil Society Forum will also play an integral role in these outreaches as it is mandated to contribute and participate in campaigns, dialogues and events as part of the National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STIs 2023–2028.

Overall, these outreaches augment the primary healthcare services provided at the City’s 24 clinics. Our efforts, bolstered by our valued partners, aim to ensure positive health outcomes for all Tshwane residents.
