Update on the Laudium and Mamelodi water supply systems

There has been a slight overnight improvement in the Laudium and Atteridgeville Reservoirs following the City of Tshwane Water and Sanitation Department’s intervention, where the water supply to certain zones was restricted last night to allow the Laudium and Atteridgeville systems to recover.

The team is still investigating the cause of a sudden drop in both systems’ reservoir levels, which started over the weekend. So far, the team has not been able to identify any visible leaks on both systems.

The City is once again urging residents to use water sparingly and to refrain from filling their storage tanks to allow the system to stabilise.

Meanwhile, the installation work of a 300 mm gate valve and two 200 mm pressure-reducing valves at Mamelodi R2 Reservoir, which was scheduled to last for 20 hours, has been completed. However, upon opening the supply line, a few leaks were noticeable on the coupling and the stopper.

A team of artisans was immediately assigned to attend to the leaks and resumed work this morning. The restoration time will be communicated in due course.

The City of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered by those residents who are supplied by the Laudium, Atteridgeville and Mamelodi R2 Reservoirs. Our teams are hard at work to ensure that the water supply is restored as soon as possible to all affected customers.

WATER-SAVING TIPS

Residents are urged to continue to make the following water-conservation measures part of their normal lifestyle:

  • Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.
  • Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.
  • Do not fill swimming pools.
  • Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.
  • Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
  • Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.
  • Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
  • Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.
  • Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
  • Take a short shower rather than a bath.
  • Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
  • Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.

Residents are urged to continue using grey water to water gardens and flush toilets. Where possible, water-saving devices should be installed.

Residents are further urged to report water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents where water is wasted on the following numbers:
