Use water sparingly website 1

Customers urged to use water wisely and sparingly to avoid higher restriction levels

We need to use water with careful consideration even when weather conditions hit high temperatures.

The City of Tshwane is continuing to experience week-on-week high water consumption by residents and businesses despite the City’s numerous requests to customers to use water sparingly.

This behaviour is putting the City’s bulk water system under severe strain and may lead to the municipality’s system running dry and eventually collapsing, something which we cannot afford to go through.

The Rand Water system, which accounts for 79% of Tshwane’s water provision, is currently under severe pressure due to the City’s excessive demand. The water utility pumps about 800 million litres per day to Tshwane, which is 18% more than the City’s licence agreement with the entity.

It is against this background that customers are cautioned that if the current consumption practice does not change, the City will imminently adjust the water restrictions to Level 2 or even higher, which will have financial implications to consumers due to associated changes in water tariffs.

Below is a table reflecting the Level 1 to Level 3 restriction tariffs:

Consumption per 30 days Restriction levels per kℓ
Level 1 Level 2 Level 3
0 kℓ to 9 kℓ R0,00 R0,00 R0,00
10 kℓ to 18 kℓ R28,97 R34,75 R41,68
19 kℓ to 30 kℓ R39,20 R58,45 R105,19
31 kℓ to 42 kℓ R45,13 R72,18 R158,75
43 kℓ to 60 kℓ R48,28 R86,89 R225,86
More than 60 kℓ R51,70 R103,38 R310,08

Residents are thus reminded of the following specific Level 1 water restrictions:

  • Do not water or irrigate gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler system between 06:00 and 18:00.
  • Do not use a hosepipe to clean driveways or patios.
  • Do not wash vehicles with a hosepipe.
  • Do not fill or top up swimming pools or water features.

The City is once more urging all residents to make a concerted effort to reduce water consumption by adhering to the Level 1 water restrictions. Punitive measures will be imposed against transgressors.

Please use water wisely and sparingly.
