In a significant step towards sustainable water management, the City of Tshwane recently collaborated with the University of Pretoria and the University of Aarhus in Denmark in hosting a set of engaging workshops titled “Wonders of Water”. Held in Mabopane and Magnolia Dell, respectively, the initiative involved local communities in discussions about their perceptions of water through artistic expression.
The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, primarily students from the ODI-Tshwane South TVET College. These young individuals shared valuable insights into the essential role water plays in their daily lives and within their communities. Through collaborative discussions and creative activities, attendees articulated their understanding of water’s significance, emphasising the need for good governance and environmental sustainability.
This workshop forms part of the CONSUS research project which aims to facilitate a sustainable transformation of urban blue-green spaces in South Africa through nature-based solutions involving local communities and government actors.
CONSUS is aligned to a broader programme to develop a water security strategy for the City, which forms part of a collaboration between the City of Tshwane, the City of Aarhus and its water utility known as Aarhus Vand. This strategy aims to create a comprehensive approach to addressing current water challenges while ensuring long-term sustainability.
As the City grapples with increasing water demand – currently exceeding its licenced supply from Rand Water – there is an urgent need for action. The municipality has warned residents that continued high consumption could lead to stricter water restrictions, potentially escalating to Level 2 or higher. Such measures would not only disrupt daily life but also have financial repercussions due to increased tariffs.
In response to these challenges, the City has implemented various water-saving initiatives, such as detecting water leaks, fixing waste water infrastructure and protecting its existing water sources. These initiatives underscore the City’s commitment to improving its water management systems while fostering community engagement.
The “Wonders of Water” workshop exemplifies the City’s dedication to involving residents in crucial conversations about water conservation. By harnessing creative expression, the City not only educates residents about sustainable practices but also empowers them to take an active role in shaping their communities’ future.
As the City moves forward with its Water Security Strategy, it will continue to seek inputs from residents and stakeholders alike. The goal is clear: To build a resilient water city capable of withstanding future challenges while promoting environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
The City’s collaborative efforts signal a proactive approach to one of the most pressing issues facing urban areas today – water security. Through community engagement, strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, the City is laying the groundwork for a sustainable future where every drop counts.
