The City of Tshwane has been notified by Rand Water about its planned maintenance of infrastructure at its Mapleton and Palmiet Booster Pumping Stations to improve network reliability and efficiency. This essential work will be carried out from 29 May to 3 June 2025.
Mapleton System
According to the water utility, the planned maintenance work involves connecting the newly constructed B16 Pipeline to Engine Room 3 at Mapleton Booster Pumping Station. This pipeline will supply water from the new Station 5 at Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant.
According to Rand Water, this major work will take four and a half days, from Thursday, 29 May 2025, until Monday, 2 June 2025, to be completed. The water utility has forewarned the City that there will be no pumping from its system for the duration of the work.
Palmiet System
On Tuesday, 3 June 2025, the water utility will isolate Klipriviersberg Master Reservoir from the Palmiet System for ten hours, from 06:00 until 16:00. This is to allow the water utility’s technicians to clean and conduct an inspection on the reservoir. During this period, pumping will be reduced to 67% in the Palmiet System.
This essential work will affect the City’s meters and reservoirs that are supplied by the Mapleton and Palmiet Systems as they will experience low pressure to no water supply.
To mitigate the impact of a possible water supply interruption, the City is planning to fill the affected reservoirs to over 80% a few days prior to the commencement of the maintenance work. However, the supply may be interrupted during the upkeep period and residents are therefore urged to use water sparingly. Our technicians will also ensure the optimal operation of the City’s water sources during the maintenance period. Roaming water tankers will be dispatched as and when the need arises.

The City wishes to remind residents to always adhere to the following water conservation measures:
- Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.
- Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.
- Do not fill swimming pools.
- Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
- Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
- Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.
- Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
- Take a short shower rather than a bath.
- Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.
