In honouring the late Nelson Mandela's birthday, the Speaker of Council, Cllr Katlego Mathebe, launched the Office of the Speaker's Nelson Mandela Day #Soul2Sole Shoe Drive.
During the launch, Cllr Mathebe called on all City of Tshwane staff and politicians to join hands to inspire change in our communities by saying that many in our communities are facing enormous economic challenges, which have been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the livelihood of people around the world. Therefore, small actions by each one of us will go a long way in bringing a smile to those in the need of a pair of shoes, especially during these cold winter days and nights.
The #Soul2Sole Shoe Drive aims to restore hope and dignity this Mandela Month. It encourages City of Tshwane staff to put new or pre-loved shoes on the feet of those in our communities who do not have any.
The campaign will run throughout June 2021 until 15 July 2021, and staff will be able to donate shoes by dropping them off at identified City buildings throughout the seven regions of Tshwane. On 16 July 2021, Cllr Mathebe will distribute all the donated shoes to charities and non-governmental organisations identified by her office.
Through such small gestures of kindness, we hope to emulate the values espoused by South Africa's foremost freedom fighter and nation builder.
