South Africa moves to Adjusted Lockdown Level 4 with new restrictions

    Tue, Jun 29, 2021

South Africa has moved to Adjusted Lockdown Level 4 as the country struggles against the third wave of COVID-19 infections. There has been a massive surge of new infections, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to adjust the lockdown level in response to dealing with the situation.

Lockdown Level 4 comes with changes in restrictions on daily life, which we must all respect and adhere to. It is a phase during the State of Disaster that requires all South Africans to play their part to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

For two weeks, from Monday, 28 June 2021, until Sunday, 11 July 2021, the following Lockdown Level 4 regulations will be in place:

    • All indoor and outdoor gatherings are prohibited. This includes religious and social gatherings.
    • Funerals and cremations are permitted, but attendance may not exceed 50 people.
    • Night vigils and after-funeral gatherings are not allowed.
    • Travel in and out of Gauteng for leisure purposes is prohibited. People will be permitted to return home if they are currently outside Gauteng.
    • Public spaces such as beaches and parks will remain open, but no gatherings are permitted.
    • Visits to old age homes and care facilities will be restricted.
    • The closure of schools for the winter holidays will be brought forward. Schools will close from 30 June 2021 and all schools are expected to be closed by Friday, 2 July 2021.
    • Restaurants will only be able to sell food for takeaway and deliveries.
    • The sale of alcohol is prohibited.
    • The new curfew is from 21:00 to 04:00.

We need to act now to contain the spread of the virus. Everyone must adhere to the following measures to protect ourselves and others:

    • Masks are mandatory in public spaces. Make sure that you wear a protective face mask that properly covers your nose, mouth and chin. Any person who does not wear a mask in public will be committing an offence.
    • Keep a safe distance from others.
    • Wash or sanitise your hands regularly.
    • Stay away from closed or crowded spaces.

The City of Tshwane encourages older residents (60 years and above) to visit their nearest vaccination site to get vaccinated. The vaccine provides the best chance of reducing new infections and severe illness or death when infected and drastically reduces chances of hospitalisation.

The COVID-19 vaccine could minimise the effects of the virus if you get infected. Being vaccinated does not safeguard you against COVID-19, but it decreases the severity of the infection should you get it.

Those who received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine six weeks ago are encouraged to return to their nearest vaccination sites to receive the second dose, even if they did not receive an SMS.
