City of Tshwane supports first-ever spelling bee competition facilitated in South African indigenous languages

    Mon, Sep 26, 2022

As part of our Heritage Month celebrations, I recently had the opportunity to attend the first spelling bee competition that was conducted in South African indigenous languages. The competition took place at Stanza Bopape Community Hall in Mamelodi late last week, with a total of 45 learners participating.

The competition was facilitated in mainly three South African indigenous languages, namely Sepedi, IsiZulu and Xitsonga. Participating learners were from selected from primary schools in Mamelodi.

As MMC for Social Development and Community Services, I was really pleased to see young, intelligent learners taking pride in speaking their mother tongues. These kinds of initiatives must be encouraged and supported wholeheartedly if we are serious about preserving our indigenous languages.

I would like to congratulate all the learners who participated in this competition. It is important that, as parents and teachers, we continue to encourage our learners to freely express themselves in their indigenous languages.
