Yesterday in my capacity as MMC for Human Settlements, I conducted an oversight visit to the Marabastad Townlands Social Housing Project in preparation of approved tenants moving in just before the end of the calendar year.
The visit comes after the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) approved a list of 691 beneficiaries submitted by the Housing Company Tshwane (HCT). This multimillion-rand social housing project is managed by HCT, a housing entity of the City.
The project is considered as one of the country's biggest social housing ventures and consists of 1 200 mixed units. It is set to benefit Tshwane residents who do not qualify for government-sponsored housing nor earn enough to qualify for home loans (earning between R1 500 and R15 000 per month).
Based on its strategic location in Tshwane, the Townlands project will play an important role in bringing our residents closer to economic nodes to enable access to job opportunities. Tenants will also find it easier and less expensive to reach their workplaces.
Urbanisation and integration of living spaces is an integral part of our housing strategy as the Human Settlements Department. We are looking forward to approved beneficiaries moving in as it has been a long process, but we are now finally reaching the promised land.
Our multiparty coalition government remains committed to delivering quality and dignified low-cost government housing to qualifying residents.
