The mandate of the Economic Development and Spatial Planning Department is to provide spatial and economic direction to the public and private sector within the City of Tshwane. The department ensures that the urban form reflects the concept of the capital city, to ensure that the service delivery takes place seamlessly and that it is accessible and responsive to the needs of residents. It also aims to boost investor confidence and economic growth by ensuring efficient and effective implementation of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act 103 of 1977). The Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, 2014 (Act 16 of 2014) must also be implemented, which will bring about a drastic change in the development planning landscape.
The department is also mandated to provide specialised economic services to priority sectors within the City of Tshwane in order to drive the growth and development of the City's priority economic sectors and to stimulate competitiveness in support of economic growth, diversification and transformation.
The Tshwane Market provides a central marketing distribution system, primarily for Tshwane and secondarily for the rest of South Africa.
