Roadworks on Paul Kruger Street

The City of Tshwane is planning to begin operating Line 1A of the A Re Yeng project in the first quarter of 2016. Line 1A will therefore become operational from the corner of Nana Sita Street and Paul Kruger Street along Paul Kruger Street and Mansfield Avenue to the Rainbow Junction intermodal facility.

In order for this section to be operational, the A Re Yeng contractor will have to resurface Paul Kruger Street between Nana Sita Street and Pretorius Street. The contractor will also be extending the sidewalks to the required width.

The roadworks will commence on Monday, 1 February 2016, and will continue until the end of April 2016.

In order to expedite the construction and to ensure minimum impact on motorists and surrounding businesses, the contractor will be closing the following sections of Paul Kruger Street for the duration of the works:

Paul Kruger Street between Nana Sita Street and Francis Baard Street.
Paul Kruger Street between Francis Baard Street and Pretorius Street.
Tenants of all buildings with underground parking will still be granted access to their parking.
Motorists are advised to use the following deviations:

From the inner city to Pretoria North:

Motorists can travel on Francis Baard Street and use either Bosman Street or Lilian Ngoyi Street to exit the city towards Pretoria North.
Motorists can travel on Nana Sita Street and use either Bosman Street or Lilian Ngoyi Street to exit the city towards Pretoria North.
Motorists can travel on Pretorius Street and use either Bosman Street or Lilian Ngoyi Street to exit the city towards Pretoria North.

From Pretoria North towards the inner city:
Motorists can travel on Paul Kruger Street until they reach Madiba Street.
Motorists can then turn left onto Madiba Street and then right onto Thabo Sehume Street.
Motorists can then access the inner city by using either Pretorius Street or Nana Sita Street.
Motorists are urged to drive within the indicated speed limit and to be alert to construction vehicles that will be travelling on the surrounding roads

Paul Kruger Street between Venter Street and Myburgh Street

The City of Tshwane is currently busy with preparatory works (relocation of trees, poles, existing services etc) on Paul Kruger Street between Venter Street and Myburgh Street. The preparatory works will continue until the 24th of August 2013 after which the contractor will commence with the construction of the A Re Yeng lanes in the median on the 26th of August 2013.

During the construction one lane of mixed traffic, in each direction, will be closed between streets where construction is in progress. The sequence of construction for this section will be as follows.

1. Venter Str to Flowers Str (Malherbe Str intersection already closed with island)

2. Flowers Str to Trouw Str (Van Heerden Str intersection already closed with island)

3. Trouw Str to past Malherbe Str halfway to the railway bridge. (Myburgh Str intersection already closed with island)

After the completion of the dedicated bus lanes, the traffic will be switched to the new A Re Yeng lanes during which time road widening will proceed on the Eastern and Western sides of the existing carriage ways. The road widenings on the eastern and western sides will be opened to traffic in stages as it is completed. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to take note of the temporary road signage during the construction period. The public is advised to be vigilant of construction vehicles that will also be using the road. Once operational, the A Re Yeng system will operate in the median of Paul Kruger Street with A Re Yeng buses running in each direction on dedicated trunk lanes.

INTERSECTION CLOSURE ON KOTZE AT NELSON MANDELA DRIVE AND MEINTJIES STREET

	Specific Location:	Intersections of Kotze Street and Meintjies Street and the intersection of Kotze Street and Nelson Mandela Drive in Sunnyside

The construction for the A RE YENG bus service will soon take place on the intersections of Kotze Street and Meintjies Street and the intersection of Kotze Street and Nelson Mandela Drive in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

A speed limit of 40km/h is in place and motorists are urged to follow the detour routes as per the signage erected in the surrounding area. Traffic heading towards the CBD can expect some delays.

Yellow Safety Barriers have been placed along the route to protect all road users from the construction areas.

The affected areas will be completed and fully operational on Monday, 30 September 2013.

Detour to travel north on Nelson Mandela Drive: Turn left into Visagie Street, right in Lillian Ngoyi Street, right again in Francis Baard Street and left to continue in a northern direction along Nelson Mandela Drive.

Detour to travel south on Nelson Mandela Drive: Turn right into Nana Sita Street, left in Sisulu Street, left in Jeff Masemola Street and right to continue in a southern direction along Nelson Mandela Drive.

Detour to travel south on Meintjies Street onto Nelson Mandela Drive: Turn left into Robert Sobukwe Street, right in Troye Street, right in Justice Mahomed Street and left to continue in a southern direction along Nelson Mandela Drive.

Access to the shops, DTI and City Improvement buildings on Kotze, Meintjies and Robert Sobukwe can be gained via the detour loop: on Meintjies Street turn right into Robert Sobukwe Street, left at the City Improvement building, left in Kotze Street and left to continue in a northern direction along Meintjies Street. Driving west on Robert Sobukwe Street turn left at the City Improvement building, left in Kotze Street and left to continue in a northern direction along Meintjies Street or turn right onto Robert Sobukwe Street in the eastern direction.

Rainbow Junction Entrance Road Phase 1

The City of Tshwane has commenced with the construction of an intermodal facility at the Wonderboom Station in Pretoria North. This facility will allow the PRASA railway station to interlock with the new A Re Yeng bus service, the Tshwane Bus services, Long distance Bus Services, taxis and meter taxis. The Facility will also link the A Re Yeng alignment that will run from Pretoria Station to Wonderboom Station with the alignment that will run from Wonderboom Station to Akasia and later on Soshanguve

The City of Tshwane have completed the A Re Yeng alignment leading up to the facility and will now continue with the construction of the road leading into the facility. The first phase of the construction will continue until the end of November 2015. The section of the road that will be affected is from Wanneburg’s Scrap Yard to Rachel de Beer Street.

During this phase of the construction, the traffic will not be heavily affected by the construction as most of the construction will be taking place next to the road. The contractor will however place yellow New Yersey Barriers next to the road on the yellow line to separate the construction side with the road surface.

Motorists are urged to be cautious of the speed limit and to drive safely through the affected area. Motorists are also advised to be cautious of construction vehicles that might be utilising the road as well.

The City of Tshwane will remove all vehicle traffic and parking from Church Square as of Tuesday, 17 March 2015 until end June 2015. This closure is implemented to ensure a safe work environment and to assist with finishing the construction on time.

Businesses that have on-site parking will still be able to access their parking. The contractor will also allow for delivery and cash-in-transit vehicles to access the businesses that have on-site parking.

Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes to travel past Church Square:

From the north going south:

Motorists can turn left onto Boom Street. From Boom Street motorists can turn right into Thabo Sehume Street and then turn right onto Pretorius Street to access Paul Kruger Street again.

From the south going north:

Motorists can turn left from Paul Kruger Street onto Pretorius Street. From Pretorius Street motorists can turn right onto Bosman Street and continue all the way up to Boom Street. There motorists can turn right onto Boom Street from where they can turn left onto Paul Kruger Street in order to exit the inner city.

Pedestrians will be able to access Church Square but will be restricted to the indicated pedestrian walkways.

The City of Tshwane have commenced with the construction of the A Re Yeng Stations on Line 1A during the month of February 2015. The station contractor is currently working on the stations at the following locations:

corner of Mansfield Avenue and Fred Nicholson Street
corner Paul Kruger Street and Flowers Street
corner Paul Kruger Street and Boom Street
corner Paul Kruger Street and Johannes Ramokhoase Street

The construction of the stations will continue until end- September 2015. The stations will be constructed in the median of the road with minimum impact on the current traffic flow. The contractor will only use the station and the A Re Yeng bus lanes to work in.

We also want to urge motorists to keep to the speed limits and obey the traffic signage. These have been implemented for the safety of the motorists and the workers on the site.

The A Re Yeng project team is currently constructing its bus lanes throughout the inner city. As part of this process the intersections need to be reconstructed. The contractor will commence construction of the Paul Kruger Street and Bloed Street intersection on Thursday, 22 January 2015. The works will continue until 30 January 2015.

Motorists should please utilise the following diversions:

Accessing the inner city:

Motorists coming from the north of Pretoria can turn left into Boom Street and then right into Thabo Sehume Street to access the inner city.

Exiting the inner city:

Motorists exiting the inner city are urged to use either Bosman Street or Lillian Ngoyi Street due to the road works on Paul Kruger Street.

From east on Bloed Street:

Motorists travelling west on Bloed Street can turn left in Thabo Sehume Street, then right into Johannes Ramokhoase Street. The motorist can then continue eastbound or they can turn right into Bosman Street to access Bloed Street again.

During November and December 2014 the contractor for the A Re Yeng project started preparation for the new bus lanes that will be constructed under the existing railway bridges in the Capital Park area. Construction will start on 22 January 2015 and continue until end of July 2015.

In order to safely construct the new A Re Yeng lanes on the existing northbound carriageway, all traffic will need to be diverted from the northern carriageway (heading towards Rainbow Junction) onto the southern carriageway (heading towards the inner city). This will result in only one lane of traffic in each direction during the construction phase.

As part of the Line 1A of the A Re Yeng Project, the City of Tshwane will be upgrading the Railway Bridges that is situated between Myburgh Street and Mansfield Avenue on Paul Kruger Street. By upgrading the railway bridges the project will ensure that the current flow of traffic will still be available once the A Re Yeng system is operational. The initial construction will consist of re-constructing and upgrading the existing north-bound lanes between Myburgh Street and Mansfield Avenue. The second phase of the project in this area will construct two new mixed traffic lanes to the west of the existing road. Once completed the traffic travelling from Capital Park / Pretoria North in a northerly direction will be diverted onto the newly constructed roadway. The A Re Yeng bus lanes will then be operational on the current north-bound carriageway.

The contractor began on Monday, 17 November 2014, with preparation works in order to commence with the construction for this section. The contractor will commence with the preparation works on the median between Myburgh Street and Mansfield Avenue. This will result in the middle lane of traffic in each direction being used for construction purposes during off peak hours from 8:30 to 15:30 each day. The preparation period will last for 7 months and will continue until June 2015 after which further construction works will be communicated to the public. Phase 2 is scheduled for construction over 14 months, commencing in the first quarter of 2015.

Contractors have commenced with the resurfacing of the road surface on the section from Boom Street to Rainbow Junction. The resurfacing will continue until Mid-November 2014. During this period various traffic disruptions will occur as the works continue.

Intermediate intersection closures:

As communicated previously. Intersections within the area will be closed for two to two and a half hours when they are resurfaced. The intersections will be closed off as and when the contractor reaches the intersection during the resurfacing process.

Traffic diversions onto the A Re Yeng Lanes

Traffic will be diverted onto the A Re Yeng lanes whilst mixed traffic lanes are being resurfaced. Please note that this might lead to residents not being able to access their properties for short periods of time once the asphalt have been placed on the road. The reason for this is that the asphalt needs to cool down first. Please note that the contractor on Work Package 3 (Louis Trichardt Street to Rainbow Junction) has commenced with the resurfacing of the section from Louis Trichardt Street to the northern Intersection between Paul Kruger Street and Mansfield Avenue and the works will continue until Friday, 24 October 2014.

Motorists are advised to please be on the look-out for the traffic signage that will be erected in the area to notify the traffic of the deviations and intersection closures. Please note that it will not be possible to exactly predict the timeframes as to when the resurfacing will be disrupting intersections as we are dependent on the delivery of asphalt and works will continue to roll out as and when asphalt is received from the suppliers.

Please note that these works will lead to the intermediate closure of the intersections in the area. The intersection closures will last about two to two and a half hours and will depend on the availability of the asphalt from the suppliers.

The contractor will ensure that the necessary signage is erected to warn the public of the intersection closures and of alternative routes that could be used during these closures. The intersection closures will only take place between 08:30 and 16:00.

Please note that the following intersection closures will take place as follows:

10 October 2014: Mansfield Avenue and Fransina Street
11 October 2014: Mansfield Avenue and Paul Kruger Street (southern intersection)

The City of Tshwane hereby gives notice that construction on the above section of Line 2A of the A Re Yeng system will commence in the month of August 2014. This is to ensure the upgrade of the sidewalks along the A Re Yeng bus route and are in accordance with the standards of the BRT system. The affected section of Line 2A starts at Nana Sita Street on the intersection with Paul Kruger Street and proceed along Nana Sita Street into Nelson Mandela.

The contractors will begin with the site establishment along this alignment on 01 August 2014, at the Cnr of Thabo Sehume and Nana Streets. Please note that notices will be issued for planned service disruptions.

The contractors will block the boundary lane in each direction for the safety of all the road users. Work will proceed simultaneously per block (Paul Kruger –Thabo Sehume, Thabo Sehume – Lilian Ngoyi, Lilian Ngoyi – Sisulu and Sisulu to Kotze). The City of Tshwane will also ensure that there is continuous access to all adjacent properties.

The City of Tshwane urges motorists and pedestrians to take note of the temporary road signage during the construction period. The public is also advised to be vigilant of construction vehicles that will also be using the road.

Once the A Re Yeng NMT pavement is in operation, it will be shared amongst, pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities.

A speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place and motorists are urged to follow detours as per the signage erected in the surrounding area. No pedestrians will be allowed to go through the intersections during the construction period. Traffic heading towards the CBD can expect some delays.
