Executive Mayor launches newly upgraded Kosmosdal Substation to improve power stability for businesses and residents

Earlier today, I joined the MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations, Cllr Daryl Johnston, with the MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning, Cllr André le Roux, to officially hand over the newly upgraded Kosmosdal Substation in Centurion.

The substation capacity has been upgraded from 20 MVA to 40 MVA at a cost of R65 million.

The project was triggered by a 20 MVA new bulk electricity application from the private developer, Growthpoint Property Group, for their proposed data centre development in the area. Working together, the City began the work to upgrade the substation in February last year until the completion of the project on 12 July 2022. The project scope of work included the following:

• Construction of the substation building to accommodate two stages of 11 kV switchgear panels and new 132 kV control and protection panels and related auxiliary equipment
• Replacement and installation of new single cables between the power transformers and 11 kV transformer incomer panels
• Replacement of all multicore control cables
• Replacement of all indoor electrical equipment, including the supply, installation and testing of twenty 11 kV switchgear panels, 132 kV control and protection panels, and batteries and battery chargers

The substation upgrade will allow for the development of the data centre and create economic growth and job opportunities in the area.

Our multiparty administration under my leadership is committed to maintaining and refurbishing all critical infrastructure. Last month, we handed over the R96 million fully upgraded Bronkhorstspruit Substation. We will soon also conclude upgrades to Soshanguve Substation.
