Consumers can use prepaid meters as a tool to help them manage their energy consumption and, in return, reduce costs. These meters also eliminate the element of surprise of high and unaffordable electricity bills, as well as the inconvenience of disconnected electricity services. The meters can also communicate directly with the City and provide meter readings to the City.

The use of prepaid meters is in accordance with the City of Tshwane Standard Electricity Supply By-laws with regard to electricity supply and metering of consumers.

The prepaid meters are installed for free by the City and they remain the property of the City.
