As MMC for Social Development and Community Services, part of my work includes supporting sport and recreation in Tshwane. In this regard, I recently joined the Honourable Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, and Nedbank to hand over a multipurpose sport court in Soshanguve.
Nedbank has a long and impressive history supporting sport and this is evident through its sponsorship of the Nedbank Cup and our home Premier Soccer League team, Mamelodi Sundowns. This time around, Nedbank worked in collaboration with Sports Trust to bring to life the sport court facility at Soshanguve South Secondary School.
Sport and recreation activities can be used to address some of our social challenges, such as the high teenage pregnancy rate and drug abuse. Furthermore, participating in sport and recreation can have a positive impact on learners’ academic performance.
On behalf of the City of Tshwane, I would like to thank Nedbank and all other stakeholders for making this project a success. I would also like to urge the community of Soshanguve, including parents, learners and teachers, to take pride in this sport facility and safeguard it from any vandalism and misuse.
