Region 4 in Tshwane, south of the Pretoria Central Business District, received the undivided attention of the teams who carried out municipal services and attended to power blackouts, water outages and waste collection matters over the past 48 hours.
Following the severe storm of Tuesday, 19 September 2023, service delivery teams have been faced with backlogs, which were compounded by the ongoing illegal strike action in the municipality. In a commendable performance, the devoted electricity teams worked for 29 hours straight to restore power in various areas in the region. This creditable action ensured that parts of Wierda Park, Olievenhoutbosch, Laudium and Valhalla, which were hit by the storm and experienced cable faults in some instances, benefitted from the power restoration efforts.
The waste team, which was complemented by contractors, upped their performance with regard to implementing the waste collection catch-up plan. The City is aware that non-collection of refuse can cause a health hazard. As the teams conduct household refuse collection, they are faced with the challenges of clearing illegal dumping at various sites. Teams will continue to work hard this weekend to collect refuse under the protection of the security services. The City hopes to reinstate the normal waste collection schedule in due course.
As the City receives warnings from Rand Water about its high water usage across the the seven regions, it is apparent that some suburbs in Region 4 fall under the top-ten consumers in the municipality. Residents are urged to continue using water sparingly.
Service delivery progress in other regions will be provided in due course or as and when it is available.
