MMC for Community Safety
As the MMC for Community Safety, I am pleased to announce that the City of Tshwane is taking significant steps to prioritise road safety and combat the serious challenge of drunk driving with the introduction of the Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus.
The Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus was officially launched on the R80 near Rosslyn yesterday, Wednesday, 18 October 2023, and will be deployed throughout the municipal area going forward.
The Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus is equipped with advanced testing equipment, enabling swift and accurate alcohol tests for motorists, reinforcing the City’s commitment to creating a safer environment for residents and visitors alike. The bus can also be used as a mobile command centre during operations.
The initiative is a direct response to the alarming prevalence of drunk driving in our communities, which has devastating consequences for individuals and their families.
Therefore, the launch of the Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus aims to deter and prevent individuals from putting themselves and others at risk by driving under the influence.
Safety on our roads is a shared responsibility, and the success of this initiative depends on strong collaboration between law enforcement, local communities, businesses and civil society. Together, we can make a significant impact in reducing incidents of drunk driving and ensuring the well-being of our communities.
I want to warn all drunk drivers in Tshwane that your days on our roads are numbered, as our alcohol bus is coming for all of you. The bus will enable swift detection of alcohol and ensure successful prosecutions. I therefore plead with motorists not to drink and drive.
Residents are also encouraged to report hotspots for drunk driving to the TMPD. This will assist the planning of operations using the bus. You can contact TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096 or tmpdcomplaints@tshwane.gov.za.
