Media statement 26 January 2023
Cllr Themba Fosi
MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations and Coordination
The City of Tshwane is intensifying efforts to combat the detrimental impact of illegal utility connections on the municipality’s revenue and the provision of essential services. The prevalence of unauthorised electricity and water connections compromises the integrity of the City’s utility systems and hampers equitable access to services for those who diligently contribute to the City by paying their rates.
Illegal utility connections undermine the financial stability of the municipality, impeding our capacity to invest in essential infrastructure and maintain the high standard of services our residents deserve. This unlawful practice places an undue burden on households, businesses and law-abiding citizens who faithfully fulfil their financial obligations to the City.
In recognition of the severity of this issue, the City of Tshwane, in collaboration with law enforcement authorities, including the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), have implemented stringent measures to identify, address and eradicate illegal utility connections. The enforcement of these measures is crucial to safeguard the integrity of our utility networks, preserve revenue streams and ensure the sustainable delivery of services to our residents.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the responsible and law-abiding residents of Tshwane who consistently fulfil their civic duty by paying their rates. Your commitment is instrumental in supporting the continued improvement of our communities and the provision of essential services.
To amplify our impact on the battle against illegal utility connections, we call upon our residents to actively engage with us in this crucial undertaking. By fostering a sense of collective responsibility, we can protect our City from the adverse effects of illegal connections and preserve the quality of services for everyone.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious or unauthorised utility connections to the City on 012 358 7095/7096 or Eskom on 08600 37566.Top of Form
