Tshwane Mayor launches TMPD Easter Road Safety campaign to save lives and lock-up drunk drivers

Media statement                                                                                                    26 March 2024

Cllr Cilliers Brink

Executive Mayor of Tshwane

Earlier today, I joined the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) at the launch of the 2024 Easter Road Safety Campaign by the N1 Carousel Toll Plaza in Pretoria North.

The Easter weekend is known for high traffic volumes and long-distance travel via public and private transport modes. Unfortunately, this is also a period where we record many traffic violations and fatal crashes.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), a total of 207 fatal crashes were reported nationally during the 2023 Easter break claiming 252 lives. Gauteng accounted for most of these fatal crashes, with 39 reported compared to 26 in 2022.

These statistics paint a deadly picture of our roads and are a clear indication that urgent behavioural change is needed. Therefore, as government and law enforcement, we must be decisive and intentional in how we implement law and order on our roads.

Today, as we mark the beginning of an intensified road safety campaign, offenders be warned you will be arrested. Tshwane has a zero-tolerance approach to lawlessness, especially drinking and driving on our roads.

Our TMPD officers will be deployed across all major routes in Tshwane with a clear mandate to ensure road safety, including roadblocks and roadside stops which are important in promoting compliance with traffic regulations and deterring reckless behaviour.

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution, patience and mindfulness while behind the wheel. Additionally, pedestrians and cyclists are reminded to remain vigilant and visible, especially during times of low visibility.

I would like to thank the members of the TMPD and Emergency Services Department for their dedication and hard work over the Easter break period.

On behalf of our multiparty coalition, I wish all those who will be travelling safe journeys and quality time with family and friends. Happy Easter holidays!
