City of Tshwane cautions service providers to beware of a fraudster impersonating the City’s Chief Financial Officer

The City of Tshwane would like to caution the public about a fraudster and scammer purporting to be the City’s Chief Financial Officer, Mr Gareth Mnisi, who is sending emails to a service provider about tenders.

The first email by the fraudster was sent on Friday, 18 October 2024, by the alleged “CFO”, a certain “Trevor Mnisi”, saying: “Kindly inform the director to contact me ASAP on 073 034 5859 regarding tender no: EAM01-2024-25 ender (sic) for the supply, delivery and off-loading of refuse bags on as and when required basis for a period of three years”.

The fraudster, buoyed by his audacity, sent another email saying: “Kindly inform the director to contact me ASAP on 073 034 5859 regarding tender no: HHS01-2024-25 Tender for sewer line connection to connect 1051 reticulated stands at Mamelodi x6 Phomolong.

The above emails are patently manufactured, penned by a clumsy fraudster and impersonator, and should be disregarded. The public is cautioned to not fall for such requests communicated via email or any other platform. The City’s tenders are advertised in various newspapers.

The City will register a case docket with the South African Police Service and ask them to escalate the matter to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The City hopes that the fraudster will be apprehended and prosecuted for attempting to commit crime using the name of our Chief Financial Officer
