City of Tshwane dismisses fake news on a planned transformer shutdown in Pretoria – 12 June 2025

The City of Tshwane has noted with concern a misleading message circulating on social media and online platforms, falsely cautioning customers about a blackout in Pretoria scheduled for 13 June 2025. According to the message, a transformer will be shut down, which will impact residents, businesses and the environment, necessitating urgent preparations by residents and businesses to minimise disruption.

The fake message is circulated with a caption “DARKNESS DESCENDS ON PRETORIA 13 JUNE POWER CRISIS TRIGGERS PANIC”.

The public is warned that this communique is false and did not originate from the City of Tshwane. The City communicates planned and unplanned service interruptions through the following official channels:

  • City of Tshwane website
  • Official City of Tshwane Facebook and X accounts
  • Official media alert or statement on an official City of Tshwane letterhead
  • Official “dear resident” letter on an official City of Tshwane letterhead
  • City of Tshwane WhatsApp channels

We urge residents to remain vigilant of such fake news. Anyone who encounters suspicious communiques or persons impersonating City officials is encouraged to report such immediately to the Tshwane Metro Police Department on
